ABOUT VAN VUGT/VANDOORN
Van Vugt/Vandoorn: Duo, trio, quartet
Dutch singer-vocal artist Ineke Vandoorn and guitarist-composer Marc van Vugt, have been working together for many years using group names like Vandoorn, Vandoorn trio and more recently Van Vugt/Vandoorn.
Their collaboration is best described as lyrical singer-songwriters to whom improvisation is of paramount importance. Whether they play as a duo or in a trio or quartet with guest players, their concerts and performances feature music on the attractive borderline between songs and improvisation. The imaginative duo is driven by Ineke van Doorn's vocal fireworks, inspired by influences as disparate as Betty Carter and Carly Simon. Virtuosos guitarist Marc van Vugt and guests like Paul van Kemenade, Andy Sheppard and Sylvain Beuf, support the gifted vocalist in a democratic environment. They contribute vibrant solos while supporting her new style of vocalese, sometimes as underpinning, other times as worthy sparring partners. Their original approach has taken them to clubs and festivals over the world, including Canada, USA, France, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Austria, Macedonia and Hungary.
Press
The international press have called Van Vugt/Vandoorn adventurous, while their concerts have been described as exciting. In their music they manage to avoid the well-worn paths of schools and styles. Critics wrote:
- The ensemble rules while the audience wins.
- The mutual understanding between the three musicians is clear and tangible and the way they interpret standards, 'Nature Boy' for instance, is characteristic. In conclusion: an intriguing singer who uses her talent to sing both originals and standards.
- Behold the name of a group that will surely surprise most of you. Their music is free and inventive, their influences diverse, yet the spirit of jazz is omnipresent.
- This Dutchwoman, with her full and sensual voice, possesses both technical mastery and deep warmth.
Collaborations
Van Vugt/Vandoorn likes to be challenged by other musicians. Not only have they been playing together with guests like sax players Andy Sheppard (UK), Paul van Kemenade (NL), Sylvain Beuf (FR), trumpettists Kenny Wheeler (UK) Eric Vloeimans (NL), trombonist Robin Eubanks (USA), and singer David Linx (Fr). But their projects have also involved working together with a full orchestra (the Dutch 'Metropole orkest' conducted by Vince Mendoza'), a classic chamber choir (Het Nederlands Kamerkoor), a project in which they temporarily merged with the Michiel Braam trio and a project with poet Ingmar Heytze (NL).
CD's
After having released three CD's under the name Vandoorn, playing their own compositions, Van Vugt/Vandoorn marketed a fourth. This Vandoorn CD, with trumpettist Eric Vloeimans, features inventive interpretations of jazz standards. At the 2001 North Sea Jazz Festival this CD, titled Love Is A Golden Glue, was awarded with the Edison Jazz Award (the Dutch equivalent of a Grammy). The Vandoorn CD ‘Uncovered’ (with saxplayer Paul van Kemenade) was nominated twice for this important Dutch jazz prize. In 2006 their CD 'Dawn' was released featuring nine original songs played by Marc and Ineke with the Dutch 'Metropole Orkest' conducted by Vince Mendoza and John Clayton.
On the invitation of the Dutch State, Ineke Vandoorn and Marc van Vugt have been
living and working for two years from the former studio of Theo van Doesburg, artist
and founder of De Stijl, in Meudon, Paris. This is where they wrote the music for the
beautiful Vandoesburgsuite (Timeless records cdsjp 470).
